September 19, 2003, Newsletter Issue #86: Doing Something Special

Tip of the Week

Many of us want to show our love in special ways. However, we get bogged down in the details. We try to plan intricate weekends or busy day trips. Invariably, they never work out exactly as we planned and we are actually more upset that the plans went awry.

That is the pain of relying on other people to make our time together special.

Those weekends away or day trips to a special place are important, don’t get us wrong. But they should be few and far between and held in very high regard. There are easier ways to show our loved one how special they are—and these ways will go farther than any weekend away ever will.

Start by putting yourself in your loved one’s place. Understand what their days are like—where the stresses are and what issues truly concern them. Then, through a little planning, create an environment that is void of those stresses and issues. This doesn’t have to be complicated. If you have kids, send them to a friend’s house for a few hours. Cook dinner (or have it delivered). Get their favorite movie ready (even if you don’t like it). Have a fire going if it is chilly. Or do any one of a thousand other “romantic” things that you know your special person will love.

The idea is not what you do, but the fact that you took the time to do it. Making someone feel special is not hard. It doesn’t take a week of planning. It doesn’t have to cost a ton of money. It doesn’t even have to take more than a couple of hours. But these little things are what will not only bring you closer together, but will strengthen your relationship many fold.

It is about understanding that someone else needs attention from time to time. It is about stepping outside ourselves and truly understanding what makes your loved one tick. It is about sacrifice for another and not begrudging it. It is about love.
