August 15, 2003, Newsletter Issue #82: Happiness--Where is it?

Tip of the Week

We all want to be happy. It is human nature to want to feel complete and satisfied, but sometimes we expect that it is someone else who will accomplish this for us. This is an unfair expectation to burden our partner with, and will put a strain on the relationship, and possibly be the demise of it. It can be exhausting trying to breathe for two people!

Low self-esteem seems to be a major contributor to those individuals who seem to need more reassurance, more acceptance, more validation, and then being disappointed when their partner does not measure up.

If there are issues you are dealing with and you know it is taking a toll on your relationship, STOP expecting your partner to be responsible for your emotional well-being. You have to be willing to be responsible for your own happiness. A complete well-balanced individual has a lot more to offer when they find someone to share the journey.
